CREATING A 21ST CENTURY IMMIGRATION SYSTEM

Central American Migration:
Root Causes and U.S. Policy.

Families arriving at the United States border today have undertaken dangerous journeys to escape persecution and violence. They have the right to request safe haven in the U.S., (right-to-life) and should not be criminalized, nor turned back to the harm that can happen to them, or separated from their children.

Undocumented immigrants contribute to our economy and pay higher tax rates than many major corporations. That included $19.5 billion in federal income taxes and $32.3 billion in federal payroll taxes. $40 to $137 billion of additional revenue could be generated each year if undocumented immigrants were granted work authorization. Think about that.

I would streamline the visa application process to reduce wait times. Implement a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. Increase support for refugee resettlement programs. Increase the number of work visas to meet labor-market demand. Improve border security while ensuring humane treatment of migrants—foster international cooperation to address the root causes of migration.

Remember, the majority of these people are Christian Catholics.
